Warwick, RI, January 27, 2016… Rhode Island’s housing market saw the largest volume of single family homes sold last year since 2004, with 9782 sales, and the highest median sales price since 2008. Year-over-year sales activity rose 10 percent and median price increased five percent from 2014, to $225,000. The data, pulled from all Realtor-assisted sales, was recently released by the Rhode Island Association of Realtors and its subsidiary, the State-Wide Multiple Listing Service.

WARWICK – Passenger traffic increased 7 percent in November at T.F. Green Airport, to 300,812 from 281,044 a year ago, the R.I. Airport Corporation said Tuesday. Comparing the first 11 months of the year to the same period last year, traffic fell 0.18 percent to 3,279,966 from 3,285,793, a difference of 5,827 passengers. Southwest Airlines again held the largest market share at 48.8 percent in November, followed by American Airlines with 22.6 percent, Delta Airlines at 12.9 percent, United Airlines at 8.7 percent and JetBlue Airways at 7.7 percent. Cargo transported fell 1.1 percent over the year in November to 2,007,505 lbs. from 2,030,186 lbs. in November 2014. Year to date, cargo has declined 1.4 percent to 23,926,033 lbs. from 24,254,846 lbs. during the prior-year period, according to information from the airport.

Area single-family housing seen as hottest market in country for 2016. By JOHN HOWELL “Red hot.” Those were the words Phil Slocum used to describe the real estate market for 2015. Slocum, of Slocum Real Estate and Insurance in Warwick, said his agency with 14 agents has seen a 40 percent increase in transactions year-to-date. And, as surprising to Slocum as well as other realtors, the Providence-Warwick market is being called the hottest housing market for 2016. “We’ve enjoyed a tremendous year of great activity,” he said. Slocum says a number of factors have combined to help turn the market around from the recession, including continued low interest rates, reasonably priced homes, buyer confidence and a cleaning of distressed and foreclosed properties. Slocum is not alone. The Rhode Island Association of Realtors forecasts a banner year for 2015, with the trend continuing in the new year if factors remain relatively stable.

Friday and Saturday nights in August were not the days to be looking to stay in one of the city’s 16 hotels. You would have been lucky to find a room. That was the good news Mayor Scott Avedisian shared Tuesday afternoon with a group of marketing directors and staff from the Crowne Plaza and the Holiday Inn Express, two Warwick hotels owned by developer Alfred Carpionato. Occasionally when the city’s overall hotel occupancy rates are up, the mayor will trumpet the fact in a press release. But this time, with an overall occupancy rate of 86 percent from June to August and 96 percent for Friday and Saturday nights in August, Avedisian looked for more of a show.

WARWICK, R.I. — A series of projects at T.F. Green Airport that will culminate at the end of 2017 with a longer main runway have reached the halfway point, with several of them recently completed or nearly done. And work on extending the main runway to the southeast is slated to begin in the spring. Adding about 1,500 feet to the main runway, bringing it to about 8,700 feet, will allow longer nonstop flights from Rhode Island's main airport as well as give greater reliability on shorter flights, where weather conditions sometimes force airlines to reduce the number of passengers on a flight. The new runway, which will cost $87 million, is scheduled to open Dec. 7, 2017. Recently completed work includes the moving of Winslow Park, a complex of youth sports fields that was near where the end of the extended runway will be. The new Winslow Park is now east of the main runway. Four full-sized softball fields and two smaller fields sit on 26 acres. The new $7.5-million park was leased to the City of Warwick and is ready to host games; however, a few "punchlist items" remain to be completed, according to Peter A. Frazier, the vice president who handles planning and related issues for the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, the state agency that runs Green and five smaller state-owned airports.
