T.F. GREEN AIRPORT ANNOUNCES NEW NONSTOP SERVICE TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Warwick, RI – The Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) announced today that Sun Country Airlines has added a new non-stop international route to the Dominican Republic. The route will be seasonal from November through April beginning November 16. Initially flights will be available once a week on Saturdays, but will expand to twice a week (Wednesdays/Saturdays) starting December 25.
“Today we announce a great new international route that will benefit the airport, Rhode Island’s tourism economy and Rhode Island’s strong and vibrant Latino community,” said Iftikhar Ahmad, president and CEO of the RIAC. “Rhode Island is home to thousands of Dominicans who will now be able to enjoy the convenience of traveling nonstop from T.F. Green Airport. When I first took this position, I met with Mayor Elorza and he stressed the importance of securing this route. I’m very pleased this has come together for the community and I want to thank Sun Country for making it happen.”
“We’re thrilled to expand our network in Providence and to provide another nonstop international route for T.F. Green,” said Sun Country Airlines Chief Executive Officer Jude Bricker. “Our focus on low fares and excellent customer service has been a great fit in this market, and we appreciate the great partnership we have with the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. We look forward to continuing to grow our presence here in Providence.”
“It is incredibly exciting to see the continued expansion of T.F. Green Airport over the past few years and I am particularly enthusiastic about the addition of direct flight services to the Dominican Republic,” said Mayor Jorge O. Elorza. “Rhode Island has one of the largest communities of Dominican descent in the region and their contributions can be seen especially in Providence. These flights will make it easier for people from across New England to visit family, enjoy a vacation in beautiful tropical destination or promote business, educational and cultural exchanges.”
Providence City Council President Sabina Matos stated, “T.F. Green Airport has established itself as one of the best airports of its size. Its terminal services, its variety of destinations and its
central location in Rhode Island and the New England region all demonstrate its strength and functionality. On behalf of the Providence City Council I want to welcome Sun Country to the neighborhood. I also want to encourage Rhode Islanders to take advantage of these direct flights and plan a trip to the sunny and beautiful beaches of the Dominican Republic!”
“Direct flights to the Dominican Republic will be a great asset for T.F. Green and for travelers from Rhode Island and beyond. Rhode Island is home to more than 50,000 Dominican-Americans, who are an important part of the fabric of our state. And these flights will be enjoyed not just by our many Dominican-American residents, but also by vacationers who will be encouraged by an easier opportunity to visit a very beautiful country. Direct flights to the Dominican Republic are a fantastic addition to the rapidly expanding opportunities offered at T.F. Green,” said House Majority Leader K. Joseph Shekarchi.
“Direct service between T.F. Green and Punta Cana International Airport is a welcome addition for Rhode Islanders,” said Senate Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey. “This new route is a convenient and exciting opportunity for Rhode Island’s working families that will bolster both of our local economies.”
“On behalf of the board, we are pleased Sun Country continues to expand their operations at T.F. Green with this important international route. We encourage all Rhode Islanders and regional travelers to take advantage of this new route,” said Jonathan Savage, chair of RIAC’s Board of Directors.
Flights will land at Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). PUJ offers direct flights from over 26 countries, 64 cities, and 90 airports around the world. The Punta Cana region is accessible and convenient for travelers with over 7.6 million international passengers arriving each year, Punta Cana International Airport is the busiest airport in the Dominican Republic and second busiest airport in the Caribbean.
