PROVIDENCE –The Providence-Warwick area was named as one of the best medium-size U.S. cities to host a convention for 2018, according to MeetingSource.com (for the purposes of the ranking Providence and Warwick were viewed as one entry).
The Providence area was ranked highest for its walkability and its promotional appeal, with five out of five stars. The area received four stars for its weather, safety and hotel room cost.
“In earning this prestigious accolade, the reviewers included Warwick’s attributes as part of the Providence meeting product,” said Martha Sheridan, president and CEO of the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau in a statement. “It says a lot about the strength of our product, from the caliber of the R.I. Convention Center, to the ease of use of T.F. Green Airport, to our great restaurant and entertainment options.”
However, the Providence area received only two stars for its ease of access, which was based on the number of direct flights to the area and travel time from the airport.
Providence shares the medium-size city convention hosting honors with Charlotte, N.C., Austin, Texas; Norfolk, Va.; Cincinnati; St. Paul, Minn.; and Salt Lake City. Cities in this grouping are capable of hosting conventions of 1,000-5,000 attendees.
MeetingSource evaluated 163 convention cities across the United States for the awards. The company selected 25 cities, including 10 large cities, seven medium-size cities and eight small-market cities.
All together, three cities in New England made the list: Boston; Portland, Maine; and Providence.
